Harvesting Success

Especially in the Midwestern states, the seasons are quite defined; each one having unique characteristics to look forward to. Every season has its purpose in the natural cycle of life as well. After the Earth’s rest and hibernation of winter, the spring welcomes a time for newness, growth, birth and fresh beginnings. Summertime reminds us to blossom and thrive before ushering us into the fall for a time of harvest, reflection and enjoyment of our hard work the past two seasons.

September 14th celebrates the Harvest Full Moon of 2008 and the 22nd marks the first official day of fall in the Northern hemisphere.
What do you have to harvest?
What goals have come to fruition for you?

Too often we are caught in the mindset of focusing on what we have to do next. Think about just the last time you thought to yourself, “There’s so much left to do!” In fact, if you’re like most of us, this thought crosses your mind several times a day – probably at least once at work and once at home, right?!
Seldom, however, do we take the time to savor our accomplishments.

While keeping a keen eye on the future and being active in our goals (as opposed to re-active) are highlighted principles that I mention often, it is absolutely vital to also appreciate what we have done already. This is not only a simple and effective way to calm the mind, but also a great way to feed the soul. Think about how warm a sense of accomplishment feels. Why not allow more of those moments in your life?
And yes, even the small things count! All those little things can add up very quickly, after all.

Dear readers, I invite you to think back to the goals you set for yourself in the beginning of the year. (If you are a new reader, please visit the archives section and take advantage of the goal-setting exercises!)

Have you met any of your goals? What about partially?
For example, maybe one of your goals was to lose 15 lbs. by May 1st, but you only managed 5. Instead of thinking, “I’m so far from my goal!” enjoy the fact that you have made progress.

Or maybe you set a goal of making time to have dinner as a family every Sunday night. You’ve been enjoying this for the last month, but now that school and sports have started up again, you’ve missed a couple weekends. Instead of throwing your hands and feeling down that you’ve “failed”, celebrate the Sundays you did share at dinnertime, make a commitment to re-coordinate everyone and then try again.

And as the old saying goes, it really can be rewarding to “stop and smell the roses” from time to time. Look at what you have accomplished in the last 9 months; enjoy how far you’ve come from 5 years ago. Unfortunately it’s often too easy to forget to enjoy that perspective. There will always be more to do, additional things to work on and future goals to reach for, but don’t forget the good stuff; don’t forget how far you’ve come.

I hope you make time for these moments, smile big, take a deep breath and enjoy!

Best wishes,
Barb Marynowski
